Create Your Headline: A Vision Board for Your Mission in Life

What would your life look like if your purpose made the front page?
That’s the power of the Create Your Headline exercise, my favourite coaching tool to guide you in visualising and defining your mission in life. It’s a simple but powerful way to create clarity, connection, and momentum for the vision you want to live.
Whether you're launching a new business, reimagining your career, or ready to finally put yourself first, this tool will help you craft a bold statement that reflects the impact you want to make. Think of it as your personal vision board, shaped like a magazine cover.
Let’s walk through it together.
The Power of a Personal Headline
Imagine walking into your favourite bookstore and seeing a magazine featuring you on the cover. What’s the headline?
“Social Leadership is Future Leadership” was one of mine. A reflection of my mission to help leaders lead with purpose, values, and impact. That headline didn’t just summarise a vision; it reminded me every day what I was building.
A well-crafted headline captures more than ambition. It helps you connect emotionally, see your progress, and commit to the journey ahead. Here’s why this exercise works so well:
1. Clarity of Vision
To write a headline, you have to get specific. What do you truly want to achieve? The process distils your hopes and goals into one clear statement, removing the noise and helping you focus on what matters most.
2. Emotional Connection
Your headline needs to feel like you. When you name your mission, you tap into purpose and passion. It becomes more than a goal, it becomes a calling. That emotional tie is what keeps you going through the inevitable ups and downs.
3. Visualisation
Writing your headline and imagining it on a glossy page triggers your brain to visualise your success. When you see your future, it feels more real, and more possible. This is the first step in turning dreams into decisions.
4. Positive Affirmation
Your headline becomes a daily declaration. It says, “This is who I am becoming.” That constant reminder boosts confidence and strengthens your belief in yourself and your future.
5. Driving Focus
Headlines are concise by nature. That means you have to choose your words wisely, focusing your energy and intentions in one direction. This keeps your vision from becoming too vague or overwhelming.
6. Setting Priorities
Crafting a headline naturally prompts you to prioritise. What will success really look like for you? What are the accomplishments that matter most? What distractions can you leave behind?
7. Manifestation
Your subconscious mind loves clarity. When you focus on your headline daily, you begin aligning your thoughts, behaviours, and actions with that vision. This consistent reinforcement increases the likelihood of achieving your goals.
8. Accountability
Pinned on a wall or saved as your phone wallpaper, your headline becomes your accountability partner. It nudges you forward, especially on days when motivation feels far away.
9. Values Alignment
As you create your headline, consider your core values. When your goals align with what you believe in, you’ll move with greater authenticity and integrity, and attract aligned opportunities along the way.
10. Adaptability
Your headline isn’t carved in stone. It’s meant to grow with you. As your journey evolves, so can your headline, reflecting new learnings, expanded goals, or even a pivot in direction.

How to Create Your Headline

This is your invitation to declare your mission. Ready to begin?
Start by answering a few key questions:
What publication do you admire and resonate with the most?
What would you like to be recognised for?
What’s your ultimate vision for your life or work?
Which achievements would make you feel deeply fulfilled?
Once you have your ideas flowing, write your headline. Make it bold, inspiring, and true to you.
Then, add more detail with:
Subtitle: Expand on the vision or impact
Sub headers: Highlight key achievements, values, or steps in your journey
Final Statement: A declaration of commitment to your path
Now take it one step further and sketch the front cover. Use a blank sheet of paper, a sketch board, or a digital tool. Add a favourite photo. Create the layout. Make it real.
And when it’s ready, put it somewhere you’ll see it every day.
Your Cover, Your Future
When you create your headline, you’re not just visualising your future. You’re actively shaping it.
This exercise isn’t about ego or recognition. It’s about clarity, intention, and taking ownership of the life you want to create. It’s about identifying what truly matters and reminding yourself, day after day, that you are capable of achieving it.
